Shocking find under a fallen tree

Saturday, 27 February 2010 13:27

GEORGE TOWN - Civil Defence Department personnel, called to clear a huge tree branch blocking the motorcycle lane of the Jelutong Expressway, got a shock when they found a person pinned underneath.

It is believed that Zulhanizam Badrul Hisham, 18, was on his motorcycle when he was crushed by the falling tree branch.

The men were cutting the branch with chainsaws at 10.15pm on Thursday when they found Zulhanizam unconscious and pinned under his motorcycle.

They called for an ambulance but Zulhanizam died from severe chest and abdominal injuries while on the way to the Penang Hospital.

The tree branch was believed to have fallen off due to strong winds.

No one noticed Zulhanizam as the branch was full of leaves and completely covered him and his machine.

Father stunned

Zulhanizam’s father Badrul Hisham Sulaiman said his son left their Sungai Ara house at 9.45pm to pick up a friend in Weld Quay.

“I was stunned when the hospital called me up at 11.30pm. It was unlucky that he died this way,” said the factory supervisor at the Surau Kampung Melayu, where his son’s funeral was held yesterday.

He said Zulhanizam, who was waiting for his SPM results, had excelled in both his studies and co-curricular activities at SMK Bukit Jambul.

“He scored five As in the PMR examination. He was also active in sports and had even represented the school in some of them.”

Zulhanizam’s uncle Zulkifli Sulaiman hoped the authorities would conduct regular checks on overgrown branches.

“Regular pruning is a must for overgrown branches in this area. Some tilted trees could topple at any time and they pose a danger to motorcyclists,” he added.
